The crop circles in question are of the third-kind. For those not in the know:

Crop Circles of the First Kind: Human-made Hoax circles. Usually very simple. Characterized by the crushed and broken stalks and sloppy construction.

Crop Circles of the Second Kind: "True" crop circles. Presumably created by extra-terrestrials or top-secret terrestrial craft. Usually highly complex. Characterized by the bent, yet unbroken, stalks embedded with tiny molten metal beads (~1/10mm), and near-perfect highly-complex patterns.

Crop Circles of the Third Kind: Form spontaneously without any confirmed cause. Explanations are often offered without any supporting evidence. Steve wants to believe...

Crazy tin-foil hat aside, it's a very cool discovery.
